Why Do People Read Blogs?

By Karen Barr

Why do people read blogs? Understanding the why factor will help you craft blogs that resonate with your audience.

Let’s dive straight in!

To Learn Something New

We’ve all been there. You are talking to a friend or listening to a podcast and suddenly have an insatiable curiosity to learn more about a topic. Or you are thinking of making a purchase and want to research the trends or product reviews before you buy.

So, what do you do next? You Google it, of course! People read blogs to learn something new. They are craving information.

When you or your content marketing team are crafting blogs for your website, ask yourself what your customers or potential customers want to learn. Could you make a list of questions they may have? Use them as writing prompts for your blog posts. You’ll gain significant traffic!

Use each blog post as a jumping-off point to multiple blog posts. For example, my post Why Blog for Business is a general post about blogging. It has inspired many other posts that focus on more specific topics related to blogging.

To Expand Their Knowledge Base

People come back to blogs to expand their knowledge base. Once a topic captivates your readers, and they feel they have learned something from you, you have hooked them!

As a business owner with a blog, you and your team must regularly update it with new posts to keep your readers coming back for more. Variety is key here. Think beginner, intermediate, and more advanced topics to help your blog readers expand their knowledge base.

My business blog focuses on online and content marketing strategies, including blogging and email marketing. I am mindful that I am talking to readers who want to learn more about marketing. Others have the basics and want to expand their business through content marketing strategies.

How often you need to blog depends on many factors. Determine a schedule that works for you. Understand how many high-quality blog posts you can create per month. Finding and hiring a content marketing writer may be your next step if your business has grown beyond your capacity.

To Be Entertained

The Internet is a form of entertainment, just like television. People often want to be entertained by what they read. How can this be achieved?

Write with a storytelling vibe. I like to call this method The White Rabbit Method. You draw the customer into a story and guide them through it.  It’s based on Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

In one of my previous blog posts, How to Scale Your Content Marketing, I wrote a case study about a client named Larry and his marketing struggles before successfully elevating his business. Written in this format, the reader is taken on a journey.

In Conclusion

Use your blog as a powerful medium that draws customers and potential customers back for more. Remember that people read blogs to learn something new, expand their knowledge, and be entertained.

Keep this in mind. Offer a good mix of blog posts. Then, watch your success soar!
