How to Work With A Content Marketing Writer
Do you know how to work with a content marketing writer? If you need a writer to help craft blog posts for your website, this article is for you.
Or maybe you’ve had problems communicating your needs to your writer and you have just about given up. Before you do, let me share my tips.
In this article, you’ll learn how to work with a content marketing writer to set both of you up for success.
Send An Article Link
When you work with a writer, you can’t expect them to know what you want immediately.
I ask my new clients to send me examples of articles they have enjoyed reading. This gives me an idea about the exact subject matter and illustrates the tone of voice they want.
I may receive blog posts from their competition. Or it may be an example of a magazine article.
One disclaimer: Don’t send me an article about Brad Pitt written by GQ. This journalist probably spent a week interviewing the famous actor and gaining insight into his life.
Yes, a PR company in Europe did send me the Brad Pitt GQ article. It was their example of writing about their tech industry client. However, I wasn’t allowed to conduct a phone interview, much less meet their client.
Just managing your expectations! 😊
I encourage clients to send articles any time they read a good one, not just when we start to work together. It’s a good way to come up with ideas.
Write An Outline
Outlining is a way to organize your thoughts. When writing a blog post outline, it starts with a subject line. It’s followed by a brainstorm of writing everything down on paper. Then, the thoughts are organized in a logical sequence.
Some of my clients, mainly in the tech industry, write a complete outline of all the key points they want the article to include. What should you include in an outline for your content marketing writer?
Outlines include an overall word count and a proposed title. Article keywords are a must. Under each subtitle is a short explanation of what needs to be done. A word count for each section is a bonus.
Note: You may not need an outline if the blog post is 500 to 1000 words long.
I don’t expect an outline from my clients. Many are hiring me because they hate to write!
If writing outlines, or writing in general, isn’t your thing, then send an article example as mentioned above.
The Post Purpose
Every blog post has a purpose. Why have you asked the writer to craft this post for you?
Some blog posts are written to help the company grow organic traffic through SEO. Other posts are crafted to entice social media users to click a link and require some searching for what is trending on the various platforms. If your intention with the blog posts is to inform and educate your reader, let your writer know.
Maybe you are trying to build your email list and want the reader to click a link and sign up. Your intention could be to increase sales and send the reader to the e-commerce site.
Any details will help the writer know your intention for the post. Note any links or CTAs you want the content marketing writer to include.
Beyond blog posts, your content marketing writer can be invaluable in developing e-mail marketing campaigns and social media.
When you find the right content marketing writer, keep them around. Pay your writer well as use their services regularly.
In Conclusion
Beyond blog posts, your content marketing writer can be invaluable in developing e-mail marketing campaigns and social media.
