These words persuade customers to open your email marketing newsletters and campaigns.  If your email sits unopened in your customer’s inbox, all your efforts are wasted. How can you improve the odds of customers opening your email?

I’m not going to lie. Competition is tough. Think about how many promotional emails you receive every day.

One way to set your company emails apart from the masses is with a strong subject line. Here are 5 Ways to Improve Email Marketing Subject Lines.

Keep it Short

Short subject lines are more attention-grabbing as people skim through their emails. Many read emails on mobile phones, so brevity is even more critical. You don’t want your subject line to be cut off!

Mailchimp, the email marketing and automation platform, suggests that subject lines contain no more than nine words or 60 characters.

Capitalize the Title

Titles use capital letters at the start of most words. Follow this rule when writing your email subject line. It’s what people expect. You may want to cap lock an entire word or the full title for emphasis.

Which would you open based on the subject line?

Add An Emoji

Add an emoji to the front of your subject line. Pick one that works in cooperation with it.

One of my clients owns a high-end European bakery with an extensive cake lineup. When I craft promotional cake emails and design them, I make sure the emoji is a piece of cake. Then, cake lovers can’t resist opening the email.

Visually, an emoji sets your email apart from a sea of sameness. People will open what attracts their eye.

Use A Number

Numbers also create a visual that stands out, presenting words as data. According to Mailchimp, emails with numbers in the subject line have a higher open rate of 29 percent and a click rate of 20 percent. That’s what you want!

I like to use numbers at the start of my subject line. You’ll also notice this in my blog posts, like this post 5 Ways to Improve Email Marketing Subject Lines.  In this capacity, readers can judge how long something will take to read.

Numbers let you be specific in your message. For example, if you are preparing for a summer sale, the 50% mark indicates your offer.

Numbers can also create a sense of urgency. Imagine a 24-hour sale. That can instantly create a sense of FOMO. Watch your company’s email open rates soar!
