Is Blogging or Social Media Better? (Here’s Why Blogging Wins)

By Karen Barr

Is blogging or social media better? In the race to garner online attention for your business, it’s best to know how to streamline your efforts and maximize your time.

In this article. I’ll walk you through the power of blogging, as well as the case for social media.

Blogging Vs Social Media

Both blogging and social media should be integral to your digital marketing or online marketing strategy. But which one is better?

There can be arguments for both sides. However, blogging is a more powerful, sustainable, and strategic tool.

Here’s why.

The Case for Social Media

Social media quickly disseminates your message to the world, allowing for real-time engagement. It’s easy to use and free, unless you choose to buy advertising.

Social media is effective for connecting and participating in online conversations. It’s also helpful for spotting trends and discovering what your competitors are doing.

The Limitations of Social Media

Social media is not a quick fix for your business. It takes continuous work to first find and then engage followers.

Social media is time-consuming. It’s not just the message that must be written, but the photography, graphics, and style. Think about how long it takes to create a Pinterest pin or an Instagram story.

Each platform is saturated with company owners and managers using social media, all looking to achieve the same goals. What’s worse, posts quickly disappear in such a saturated marketplace.

Let’s look at the life of a social media post. Twitter (X) posts last a scant 12-20 minutes. Facebook gives you five to six hours of outreach. LinkedIn gives you 24 hours to convey your message.

What’s more, a social media platform can decide to change its algorithm, on which you, as a user, are dependent. Recently, this happened to several of my technology clients on LinkedIn. It took a lot of effort to revise everything!

The Power of Blogging

As the owner of your website, your blog is yours forever. It doesn’t disappear until you decide to take down your website.

Here, you are free to write whatever you would like to help engage your customers. This allows for deeper storytelling, unlike social media posts.  Search engines such as Google reward well-written, SEO-rich blog posts with organic traffic.

This means your post has longevity for months and even years!

Blogs also align well with advertising your products. By adding simple links within each post, it’s easy for customers to link back to your store.

Blog posts are also the perfect format to link to lead magnets and subscriber funnels. Keep building that e-mail list!

Blogging and Social Media Together

Use social media to amplify your blog posts with a link. Remember, the goal of social media is not just about amplifying your company’s existence. It’s essential to get potential customers to your website. That’s where they will have a deeper dive into your company, products, and services.

Better yet, turn your blog posts into social media snippets. Cut your workload in half by repurposing your blog posts.

In Conclusion

Is blogging or social media better?

Blogging is the clear winner in comparison to social media. Put it at the forefront of your digital marketing plan. Then pair it with social media.
