What is Evergreen Content?

By Karen Barr

What is evergreen content? Regarding blogging, it’s a post that remains relevant throughout the years. Think of it like a healthy plant in your home and garden that always stays fresh.

Evergreen content is important because it remains static, potentially continually drawing in organic search traffic. Let’s take a closer look.

Blog Posts With Longevity

Here are some examples of blog posts that can be considered evergreen content. When you write a how-to blog post with step-by-step instructions on completing a task or project, this is evergreen content.

Blog posts presenting tips also have longevity on a blog. A florist may write an article with tips about Growing An Indoor Mediterranean Garden or How To Grow Orchids.

I have blog posts on my website that continually bring in traffic, such as Why Blog for Business and How to Repurpose Your Blog Content. These topics are always relevant to my readers.

Posts With A Short Shelf Life

Posts that give news leading up to or after an event will have a shorter life value on your blog. This content will not be relevant shortly afterward if you tell readers about a special dinner at a restaurant or a seasonal fashion update.

This isn’t to say this content isn’t essential. It is. However, evergreen content gives you more bang for your buck. Remember to keep your news articles short.

Benefits of Evergreen Content

This kind of content can potentially increase sales throughout your business’s lifespan. Think of it as the law of averages.

You could write content on Fashion Trends for Spring 2025 with examples and links to your website. After posting it on social media and designing an email marketing campaign featuring it, you could successfully sell $5000 worth of clothing.

Another post, Classic Ways to Wear Silk Scarves, sells two silk scarves weekly for $100 each. Over the year, you have made $10,400. Over two years, that is $20,800!

The Exception to the Rule

There are specific seasonal blog posts that I still consider invaluable within retail and e-commerce. These are holiday posts. If you are in the industry, you are thinking months in advance.

I worked in retail marketing for many years. We were concerned about Christmas in July! That’s when I had to place my Gingerbread House orders!

Today,  I own a content marketing and consulting business. My blog has holiday posts that get traffic every month, such as 5 Christmas Marketing Strategies or 5 Marketing Strategies for Valentine’s Day.

While my client base is B2B, consumers also love holidays. This is excellent news for B2C companies! Many consumers search for topics months in advance. You’ll never feel the need to delete a holiday post, and holidays are never old news.

In Conclusion

Evergreen content are blog posts that stay relevant 365 days a year. Unlike current events and news stories, these blog posts have longevity.

Keep in mind that there are exceptions to the rule.  Blog posts featuring advice about major retail holidays like Christmas and Valentine’s Day are not considered evergreen content. However, these blog posts can still be relevant any day of the week. People like to dream and anticipate their futures.
