What is Batch Working?

Working in batches is a way to be more productive and time-efficient. It sounds impressive. Am I right? And it really works!

Here’s why.

It’s the opposite of multitasking.

Once upon a time, the keyword was multi-tasking. Today, many company owners are discovering how ineffective this strategy is.

Jumping from task to task is scattered and time-consuming.

In this article, you’ll learn why and how to start batch working

Working On One Task At A Time

Batch working involves focusing on one type of task at a time. For your marketing tasks, think of it as a manufacturing assembly line.

Look at your weekly or monthly schedule and block off time. You can use blocks that run for a couple of hours or a full day. Colour coding lends visuals.

For my business, I write blog posts on my website about blogging, email marketing and online marketing.  I keep a running list of topic ideas on my phone.  When I am ready to write, I block out four-hour time segments in my schedule and write without distractions.

I turn off my phone. I do not check my email.

This helps me focus and develop flow in my work. Writing one blog post gives me ideas for others. I keep writing.

I schedule a block of time to complete my weekly company newsletters to work ahead. Each blog post I write is repurposed into my newsletter for my email marketing campaigns.

This helps me focus and develop flow in my work. Writing one blog post gives me ideas for others. I keep writing.

My website is graphic-heavy, so I will spend a few fun hours creating graphics in Adobe and Canva. I use these in multiple ways for blog posts, email marketing, and social media.

Task batching helps me complete tasks ahead of time. I may not need to work on the same task again for weeks.

By batching my work into one type of task, I save hours.

Working On One Subject At A Time

I write articles for magazines and trade publications. I always have multiple writing projects on the go—all with different editors and deadlines. So, I block out hours in my weekly schedule, including full days of writing articles.

Some focus on food and travel. I write others about technology. These articles work on different parts of the brain. By batch-working my subject matter, I stay focused.

I do the same when interviewing multiple people for a magazine article. I  will schedule all the interviews, for example, on a Wednesday afternoon to focus on the subject matter. I’ll have a list of questions prepared, but other questions will come up as I speak to the person I am interviewing.

If one person gives me an excellent explanation for the first question, I may not need to ask the same question to the second.

Subject batching keeps my articles on track.

In Conclusion

Try batch working for yourself. Give up the last-minute scramble of trying to achieve your work goals.

Through batch working, I’m not frantically trying to meet editor deadlines. My clients have their blog posts and email marketing campaigns set to automate weeks in advance. I am a much more focused journalist and content marketing strategist.
